Plant cells

At the heart of all our products lies a unique Plant Stem Cell Complex, which is based on apple stem cells from the very rare and unique “Uttwiler Spätlauber” apple variety as well as stem cells from the goji plant. The complex protects the longevity and vitality of skin stem cells and stimulates the dermal cell-to-cell communication through exosome activation. This delivers a revolutionary anti-aging performance for an in-depth rejuvenation.


Furthermore, all serums contain Hyaluronic Acid and Pullulan, which lead to a deep moisturization and simplify the microneedling application as no separate lubricant is required.



Microneedling induces a healing response in the skin and thereby rejuvenates the extracellular matrix. Specifically, the network of collagen fibers and other molecules that support the skin structure are redensified. This results in a more elastic, firm, and supple skin.


To confirm this efficacy in skin rejuvenation for the LAB91 serums and in particular for the Plant Stem Cell Complex contained therein, a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical study was recently performed in Switzerland. This saw a microneedling treatment at 0.5 mm needling depth being administered with the LAB91 Juvenis serum four times in total (on days 0, 7, 14, and 21) with performance measurements taken on day 28 and day 56.


By using the LAB91 Juvenis serum with the microneedling treatment skin rejuvenation was improved through significantly increased skin elasticity as well as the density of the skin after 56 days (see graphs).

The process of microneedling, while beneficial, also minimally injures and thus stresses the skin. This disruption of the skin barrier can be measured through the increase of a parameter known as “transepidermal water loss” (TEWL). The higher the TEWL, the more water evaporates and is lost from the skin. Meanwhile, a low TEWL corresponds to an intact skin barrier.

Dark regions correspond to low density and brighter spots to regions of high density. After 56 days, dermis and epidermis density was visibly improved.

By using LAB91 Juvenis serum with the microneedling treatment skin recovery was improved through decreasing skin roughness and TEWL after 28 days by 15.2% and 29.1% respectively compared to day 0.


In this study, the antioxidative and rejuvenation properties of the microneedling serum LAB91 Energia were evaluated.


For the following examinations, skin tissue samples were needed. This is why the study was conducted on skin explants (ex vivo) and not on volunteers directly. These skin explants were obtained from a 51-year-old Caucasian female donor who had undergone plastic surgery. On these skin tissue samples, microneedling at a 0.5 mm depth using LAB91 Energia or a respective placebo formulation were applied.


The results were as follows:


Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS, harmful forms of oxygen that play an essential pathophysiological role in oxidative stress): Microneedling with the placebo serum increased skin explants’ oxidative stress whereas LAB91 Energia treatment reduced ROS levels below those of non-microneedled skin explants.

Gene Expression Analysis: Genes associated with skin rejuvenation (mainly collagen and elastin) were upregulated after microneedling. LAB91 Energia further enhanced their expression, suggesting improved rejuvenation.

In conclusion, LAB91 Energia, used during microneedling, was found to effectively reduce oxidative stress in microneedled skin and enhance skin healing and rejuvenation. This demonstrates its potential to improve skin health and appearance when incorporated into microneedling procedures.

During microneedling, the skin is minimally injured with very fine needle pricks. The skin is perforated with a so-called needling pen to which fine needles are attached. Through this perforation, cosmetic active ingredients of the applied serum can penetrate deep into the skin and activate the cells.


Furthermore, this slight wounding stimulates the self-renewal process of the skin. The cells of the dermis, which are called fibroblasts, are stimulated to produce new collagen fibers, resulting in the accelerated renewal of the dermis.

The applied microneedling serums are sterile formulations that contain special active ingredients to support the desired treatment.


None of the LAB91 active ingredient serum formulations contain any irritating additives or preservatives. In addition, our serums have been developed for professional use with a microneedling pen only.


Needle pen

The best results in microneedling treatments are achieved by using a microneedling pen. This is a medical device featuring particularly fine needles. The penetration depth of these needles into the skin can be adjusted using the pen.


The treatment of the whole face takes only 20 – 30 minutes. The needling pen is moved over the skin in small, circular movements and without pressure. Generally speaking, good results can be achieved with a puncture depth of only 0.5 mm.
